Fruity!

We have a cat that eats mangoes like its raw mouse meat.
There used to be a flower on this pomegranate!
Over the past month, the children have been disecting fruit to find the flower from whence it came. Today we sliced open a pomegranate in order to identify the flower parts. What a beautiful specimen! You can see the sepals easily around the outside. But even more you can see the stamen and anthers, as well as the pistil and style. Nature is pretty darned neat.

Pomegranate Blossom

According to Wikipedia, Pomegranates figure in many religious paintings by the likes of Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, often in the hands of the Virgin Mary or the infant Jesus. The fruit, broken or bursting open, is a symbol of the fullness of Jesus' suffering and resurrection.
