We found this poor coccoon at our last visit to the Discovery Museum!
When we found the little guy, he had made 90% of his coccoon, and was trying to re-attach himself to something secure. I dont know if a bird or child found his spot and disturbed him, or what. But he was laying on the ground, trying to crawl with his front feet out, dragging the coccoon toward a city bench. Good luck with that location!
I always have some sort of little container with me in my purse, for just such events. So we popped him in there and brought him to a new home: a cardboard box with leaves that match his outfit. He wasted no time securing himself to the lid of the box and closing things up with silk.
This all took place about a week ago, late July. The coccoon was very long and skinny, much the profile of a little caterpillar. But today, upon checking things out, we see that the coccoon is fatter in the middle! Hmmm.... What could be going on in there? The little tail seems empty like a dangling sock. Somebody is metamorphising!
The question is, will we know when he comes out? I think we will place the cardboard box in a 10 gallon glass tank with a lid, so that we can observe better. Its cool in our house, and that tends to slow these guys down a bit! We shall see what comes!
