| Some weeks ago, Big Sister discovered a Cardinal guarding the pine tree in our front yard... and upon closer inspection, she found a nice little nest with three eggs! Two eggs hatched, the third never did, and the baby Cardinals grew quickly as we all observed each day. Big Sis kept a journal of observations of both the babies and the adults. |

| Shortly after this image, the two Cardinal babies flew the coop, finding protection in our nearby prairie plants. Mama Cardinal herded them along the ground until she could bring them to the creek. The babies had only hatched a week before and we were surprised to see them ready to go so soon! |

| Another night brought us to a night insect collection hosted by Jim Wiker of Illinois State Museum at Dickson Mounds. Here a powerful mercury vapor lamp draws in thousands of insects to a white sheet while the kids look on. |
