Our trip to Cahokia was postponed til next week. Too much rain near St. Louis.
But instead we stayed home and focused on ancient China.
We moved into this house just 18 months ago and the storage room is a nightmare... or a dream. You can find amazing and interesting items in there. It's just that when you WANT to find an item, you dig through boxes for a long time. But, I managed to find some things that Big Sis and I had created a few years back when we studied ancient China. We put them on a low table in our living room. Big Sis and Little Brother had a blast learning and re-learning.
- A Chinese ink stick and well, with two calligraphy brushes.
- A pencil for the less calligrahy-abled, and paper with large boxes within which one might copy Chinese characters
- A lovely book that shows the develoment of Chinese pictograms into modern characters.
- A card game to match pictograms to their modern equivalent, with corresponding items to match the cards. (For example, for the character for "shell" there is a little cowry shell which the ancient Chinese used for 'money'.)
- A magic school bus book on China. (I know. MSB is close to twaddle, but full of info!)
- A continental globe with activity for identifying each continent. We use Alaine Wolf's Book, I Look Out at the Stars and a little figurine to lay on each continent.
- A political borders map globe for finding China in relation to the Fertile Crescent.
- A tray of Chinese themed items; a panda bear fig, a soldier, a silk fan, a vase with Chinese scenery...
