Personal Accomplishments

We all have goals in life...
The children know that small steps count. Little Brother has been frustrated by buttons for several years. He can button... its just that the shirt is always crooked, with buttons in the wrong hole.

Yesterday and today, he was really working on getting things straight. So straight, in fact, that he looks a little more prim and proper than most people in our family. Below is a picture of a very diginfied young man, who has worked hard to button his shirt properly...and accomplished his mission! The serious look is proof of his pride and dedication!
Big Sis is working on other domestic tasks. She recently signed up for 4-H, challenging herself with the topic of Heritage Cooking. This meshes well with another homeschoolin' mama's ideas for her daughter- to be able to accomplish basic household tasks by the time she leaves home. So Big Sis is learning some recipes.

Honestly, we dont eat red meat that much. Perhaps every three to six months I make a roast in the crock pot. It always goes over well! MMMMM!!! I had prepared to cook one today when Big Sis said she wanted to be a part of it.

She learned how to trim fat off a roast, about good marbling and nasty, hard fat. She peeled and chopped carrots and potatoes, and diced celery and onions. She snuck a little onion soup mix into the juices and tried a few spices and herbs. Then she recorded this recipe and how to prep and cook it in her recipe journal. Big Sis is already considering how to alter her recipe to reflect her personal tastes. That's my girl!

Next, she wants to make an Indian curry of sorts, using chickpeas, lentils and cauliflower...
