Frog and Toad's New Abode

A nature trip today provided some surprises for our family today. The weather was PERFECT. No joke! It was 70degrees, with a cool breeze and a warm sun. We went creek walking and found fossils and frogs. And a toad.

I ALWAYS have something in the car that we can bring critters home in. This time it was a giant pretzel container and our water canteen. The frog and toad we found came home in the pretzel container, and a 1/2 gallon of creek water came home in the canteen.

At home, we dug out the 20 gallon tank, scrubbed it up with baking soda and water, and filled the bottom with 2 inches of dirt and compost. On top of that some rocks, pebbles and moss, along with a low ceramic dish to hold water. Little Brother had painted a 'toad abode' at Christmas last year. It sat out in our garden all summer, but has come in to house our new pets. Very colorful!

A Leopard Frog, we think.
Big Sister believes the frog is a leopard frog and the toad is an American toad. They are friends, although they do not know it yet. We know that toads and frogs are simlar but different and hope to learn more about these differences through observation. Also, a trip to pick up some crickets and meal worms is in order.

A 20 gallon LONG tank provides more floor space for critters.

Ah! A cool site that reviews media.
"The Good Media Good Kids Project uses the Rating Ethical Content System (RECS) for rating children's media. RECS provides scores for how much a story emphasizes ethical sensitivity, ethical judgment, ethical focus, and ethical action."
