Little Brother's Medieval Study

Overview of the medieval keep. Little Brother took a few hours to research several books for information and then constructed this accurate scene

The main tournament ring: Jousting, archery, armed combat. 

Archery- There are two type of bows: the long bow, which had more power in flight, and the cross bow, which would have had less umph but was faster. 

While the knights fight on foot, there must be a place for their horses. This is the stable.

At night, the lord needs somewhere to sleep. However, it can double as an office. 

Nobles in a stone keep would need tapestries as above to decorate and bring brightness to the dull color of the stone. They also depicted great battles, and drafts from invading the castle. Hypothesising on Ranger's Apprentice book 3, a castle lord uses tapestries to demonstrate his wealth and power with the size and the scenes depicted. 

The keep has an outer wall and usually an inner structure containing the king's chamber, kitchen, great hall, etc. The outer wall would hold the armoury, a room for the sheriff to sleep in, and a place for the guards to relax. Note: In the medieval era, the sheriff is not a cowboy with a big mustache and star on his shirt. He is in charge of the armed forces as well as making sure that there is no criminal intention. He also cares for the keep when the lord is away on business.
