The Little Bits That Put My Day Together

MORNING

We have been tired the past two weeks in my family. After losing a close family friend (like a grandfather to us)and spending the weekend in visitation and funeral, we have used up a lot of emotional energy. So sleeping in has been the norm most mornings.

Between 9 and 10 am, some dear friend calls, assuming that we should be up and at 'em, and instead wake us for the day. We appreciate the reality alarm clock. Seriously. It is good when the real world gives us a call.

Our morning was short, but I can count some little bits that made it into a whole.
  • We all ate cereal and milk. Happily.
  • I created a series of 50 cards, representing different languages and written alphabets around the world. Just a sampling each.
  • Little Brother watched a PBS segment about Suzuki violin method, and was inspired.
  • Big Sis slept more. (Good for her pre-adolescent body)
  • Big Sis created more characters for her eternally-being-written-great-american-novel.
  • Little Brother danced.
AFTERNOON
We all got ourselves together in time to jump in the car and traverse out to a fellow homeschool family's home. The plan: Maria Montessori's Great Lesson Number Four, The Coming of Writing!
  • Mrs. M told the story, memorized and focusing on civilizations that used pictograms, heiroglyphs, and letters.
  • She set out a time line, and the kids placed pics and examples of papyrus, cunieform, glyphs, the printing press, a torah, and more...not neccessarily in that order. :)
The children then worked at stations:
  • Greek and Hebrew transliteration.
  • Sumerian pictogram to cunieform development sequencing.
  • Chinese calligraphy on a 'water' slate.
  • Tracing various written alphabets from 50 different languages. (see my morning bit above)
  • Working with the timeline.
EVENING
After a book study for the adults (we are studying The Secrets of the Rosary- Monfort), the kids and I headed home, dropped by Aldi for a handful of groceries and made dinner. Tonight was one of the few nights this week that we were able to cook, eat and linger at that table. So often dinner is squeezed into a 30 minute period before another event. Although, we eat together at the table 99% of the time.
The kids and I made:
  • Taco Bar with:
  • Flour taco wraps, lightly browned on the iron skillet
  • Refried beans
  • Black beans
  • A sprinkling of cheddar
  • Black olives
  • Frozen, thawed corn
  • Shredded carrots
  • Guacamole
  • Sour cream
  • Artichoke and garlic salsa
The kids LOVE being able to choose what they put on their tacos. Then for dessert Peanutbutter, Marshmallow Brownie Cake. Not bad!
Some days we make it through by taking a little bit at a time. Savor each moment, stay in the NOW. It all seems more precious this way. Little bits that make up a whole day.
