In our early American history studies we learned about an amazing young woman, who at the age of 14, defended her small settlement from siege. Marie-Madeleine's family had settled in New France, now Canada, some hundred years ago. Her story is particularly fascinating because we still have her account in her own words.
So of course, we were inspired to make forts like the early settlements of Marie-Madeleine's time. Lots of fun. I happened to have picked up a foam fort kit two years ago on clearance for just a few dollars. I searched my homeschooler's secret stash to find it, and Little Brother was excited to put it together. Big Sister wanted to create her own, using the historic descriptions of a typical fort. Each house within the palisades had a small tobacco patch.
