Where I Left Off ~ August 2015

I have a prairie growing in my backyard.

It's actually pretty scrappy looking. I've incorporated as many native plants as I can get away with in my yard, while still keeping the city and my neighbors happy-ish. If I could, I'd have 100% prairie. But instead I have several strips of prairie plants woven into the mowed grass areas.

This fat cat was rescued from a curious child-visitor and placed on top of a milkweed plant.

One of the native plants that is doing rather well is common milkweed- the plant that monarch butterflies require. It's thriving!

Unfortunately, every year, I see fewer monarchs in my yard, despite the growth of supportive plants and habitat. I'm worried.

Nevertheless, we do have a few cats grow up here! I'm glad our homeschool can be part of the solution for monarch butterflies.
